The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in India advocates for the integration of environmental awareness and sensitivity in school curricula. The NEP 2020 recommends the inclusion of environmental awareness, traditional Indian knowledge systems, and respect for the environment. It also proposes the introduction of environmental education as a contemporary subject and appropriate integration of environmental awareness in all B.Ed programs.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is developing National Curriculum Frameworks, seeking inputs from stakeholders, including various ministries, departments, and states.

To promote sustainable lifestyles, the government has launched Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), organizing activities such as quiz competitions, exhibitions, and expert talks. The curriculum materials prepared by NCERT incorporate environmental concerns in all subjects at all stages of school education, including science, social science, and language textbooks.
